“Is my phone 5G?” and other top 10 questions about 5G, answered

Wireless has undergone some big changes over the past couple of years, namely the introduction of 5G. While 4G and 4G LTE are still widely available, 5G has quickly become the new standard. Below, we answer some common questions (including “is my phone 5G?”) about this tech and what it means for you.

Top 10 questions about 5G

It may sound complicated, but it really isn’t. 5G is simply the next generation in wireless connectivity. It’s faster, more powerful, and offers more capacity for all your needs. Work, stream, watch, listen, and game your way in more places.

5G networks

1. What’s the difference between 5G Nationwide and 5G Ultra Wideband?

The difference between 5G Nationwide and 5G Ultra Wideband boils down to speed and coverage. 5G Nationwide sets the base for connectivity with faster connection and more reach. It operates on a low-band spectrum alongside 4G and 4G LTE for widespread access.

5G Ultra Wideband (abbreviated as 5G UW), in comparison, provides the fastest, most powerful wireless experience available today. Operating on high-band mmWave spectrum, 5G UW offers better, lag-free performance for multiplayer gaming, and high def video and streaming.

You can read more about 5G Nationwide vs. 5G Ultra Wideband in one of our recent blogs.

2. Where is 5G Nationwide available?

You’ll find 5G Nationwide across much of the country, minus some very remote areas, just like 4G and 4G LTE. In fact, when you can’t access 5G Nationwide or are in a location where it isn’t covered, your phone will automatically connect via 4G/4G LTE. You stay connected nearly anywhere you go.

For instance, if you’re at a work site or on a hiking trip with your Kyocera DuraSport 5G UW, you should still have coverage even in remote terrain.

3. Where is 5G Ultra Wideband available?

While less widespread, 5G UW is available in areas that already have 5G Nationwide. 5G UW is mainly concentrated in select cities for now, but that list is rapidly growing.

Verizon’s 5G expansion includes the use of C-Band, a mid-range wave spectrum that “bridges” the gap between 5G Nationwide and 5G UW. This effectively brings 5G Ultra Wideband to 100 million people in 1,700 cities throughout the country.

4. Do all cell phone carriers have 5G?

All major wireless carriers offer 5G, but not all offer Verizon’s exceptional service. According to J.D. Power, Verizon ranks highest in customer satisfaction, especially among small business customers.

Using 5G

5. What kind of phone or device do I need to access 5G networks?

You can access 5G networks with a 5G-capable device, including smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches. New smartphones, like the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, for example, are usually designed and built for use with 5G.

When you need secure Wi-Fi right where you are, consider adding a Verizon 5G hotspot to your tech collection. Connect multiple devices and share your private network with others.

6. Is my phone 5G?

Many new phones, like the motorola edge 5G UW, make it easy for you to figure out. Putting 5G in the product name minimizes guesswork. For others, the answer may not be as obvious. Check your settings to see if your phone is 5G-ready.

On your Google Pixel 6 Pro or other Android device, go to Mobile Network under Settings > Network & Internet. You should see a list of all technologies supported, including 3G, 4G, etc. If the list includes 5G, you’re set.

iOS has a similar process. Take your iPhone 13 Pro Max, go to Cellular Data Options under Settings > Cellular. Your screen should show 5G for voice and data.

7. Which Verizon Unlimited plans offer 5G network access?

Good news: all Unlimited plans give you 5G Nationwide network access and unlimited data. The 5G Start plan gives you just the basics you need at only $35/mo. per line. For even more services and options, choose from three other Unlimited plans.

8. Which Verizon Unlimited plans offer 5G Ultra Wideband access?

5G Play More, 5G Do More, and 5G Get More all give you 5G Ultra Wideband, 5G Nationwide, unlimited data, and home internet discounts.

Of the three, 5G Get More offers the most benefits, especially for working and streaming on the go. With this plan, you also get unlimited premium network access, Verizon Cloud, the Disney+/Hulu/ESPN+ bundle, Apple Music, Apple Arcade or Google Play Pass, and more.

5G perks

9. Which stadiums and arenas offer Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband?

Watching your favorite teams in person is now a whole lot more engaging and immersive with 5G Ultra Wideband. Currently available in 60+ stadiums and arenas, 5G UW is helping fans reimagine sporting events, concerts, and other large gatherings.

The biggest football game of 2022 was held at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA. With 5G Ultra Wideband, attendees enjoyed an enhanced halftime show experience, thanks to AR and an array of 360º cameras spread throughout the stadium.

10. What are the benefits of 5G Ultra Wideband?

Besides rocket boosted speed and performance, 5G Ultra Wideband improves your online experiences. From video chatting, to telehealth, to running your favorite apps, 5G UW makes wireless smoother and more seamless.

You can also complement your new zero lag lifestyle with 5G security tools and coverage for damage, loss, or theft with Verizon Mobile Protect.

Verizon 5G: the network you want

Sure, most major carriers now offer 5G. But who has the best 5G network? Our answer may be biased, but it’s also correct. Verizon leads the nation in reliable, accessible 5G along with the entertainment, music, and gaming options you want.

Verizon 5G Home internet

Some customers can also enjoy 5G Ultra Wideband without leaving the house. Verizon 5G home internet is available in select areas. Plans start at only $25/mo.

Verizon 5G Home is expanding along with Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband network, so while it’s making its way to more cities, you may need another home internet option.

Fios is Verizon’s 100% fiber-optic home internet option that moves at the speed of light (literally). Upload and download with virtually zero lag and choose the bandwidth you want, up to a gigabit.

When it comes to 5G vs. fiber, both are excellent. You’ll enjoy steady, high-powered home internet no matter which one you choose.
