Hanging by the pool or the beach can be risky business for your electronics. However, these waterproof and water-resistant accessories and tips can save you (and your smartphone) from a potential disaster.
Keep in mind: nothing is 100% waterproof. Any devices and accessories that claim to be waterproof or water resistant usually have an IP code, or Ingress Protection Code. This code rates the degree of protection the device materials provide against water, dust, and dirt.
For example, the JBL Flip 5 Bluetooth Speaker gives you 12 hours of battery life, and is IPX7 waterproof up to three-feet deep. Complete with PartyBoost, it sounds like the perfect speaker for a pool party.
Most smartwatches are also waterproof or water-resistant. The Apple Watch Series 6 is perfect for the pool. You can leave your phone in a safe, dry place but still make calls, send texts, and more. You can track your pool workouts, too. When you’re done swimming, just click the water droplet on the control panel and turn the crown – little bursts of air will come out of the speakers and clear out any remaining water.
Water-Resistant Smartphones
Most smartphones already have a slightly water-resistant coating, but some have an official IP rating that provide extra protection against water and dust.
iPhone 11 Pro Max – 13 feet of water resistance for 30 minutes (IP68)
iPhone 11 – 6.5 feet for 30 minutes (IP68)
Samsung Galaxy S20 series – 5 feet for 30 minutes (IP68)
OnePlus 8 – 5 feet for 30 minutes (IP68)
Google Pixel 4 and 4 XL – 5 feet for 30 minutes (IP68)
Samsung Galaxy S10 series – 5 feet for 30 minutes (IP68)
Samsung Galaxy Note 10 series – 5 feet for 30 minutes (IP68)
iPhone SE – 3.3 feet for 30 minutes (IP67)
For some extra protection, try these tips and accessories.
Invest in a waterproof case.
One of the easiest ways to protect your smartphone from the water is to use a waterproof case. All the ports, plugs and speakers will be sealed to prevent any water from seeping into your device. These cases also protect your phone from dirt, dust, and other debris. Plus, depending on the case, you can safely use your phone underwater to snap photos, record video and more.
Try a waterproof pouch, bag or jar.
A more budget-friendly option is a waterproof pouch. Just drop your smartphone in, make sure it’s sealed, and you’re protected! If you’re less interested in using your phone near the water and just want to make sure it’s protected, a Ziploc bag or a waterproof bottle or jar are also options. You can even add a tennis ball to make it float.
How about nano-coating?
Nano-coating, also called ceramic coating, is an invisible layer of nano particles that repels liquid, dust, oil, and dirt particles from your smartphone. Though the ports and plugs of your phone are still exposed to potential moisture, your screen will be protected in case of a spill or a splash. Plus, nano-coating can make your screen more resistant to scratches and fingerprints.
