At Apple’s recent iPhone 12 keynote, guest Hans Vestberg, Chairman and CEO of Verizon, showed up to give an exciting announcement of his own: Verizon’s 5G Nationwide service is now live, including 5G Ultra Wideband.

Until now, [most people have] been waiting for 5G to be real, with the network coverage they expect, the incredible performance they’ve been promised, and the devices they love. Well today…the wait is over.” – Vestberg

The wireless network giant is rolling out the highly anticipated service expansion just in time for the release of Apple iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro.

Get the 5G Basics

With all the buzz around both Apple and Verizon’s announcements, customers have a lot of questions. We’ll answer a few of the most common below.

  1. What is 5G?
5G is a massive leap forward from 4G and 4G LTE, offering astounding speed and capacity with minimal lag for a more seamless and satisfying mobile experience. That means you can work, collaborate, surf, watch, listen, conference, and game online faster than ever before.
  2. How does it work?
5G uses millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum technology to send data quickly. Since it operates at higher frequency, it can carry vast amounts of data at astounding speeds. That’s great news for streaming. As a result of 5G wireless, you’ll get your favorite media and music almost as quickly as it takes to click on the titles.
  3. How fast is 5G?
5G Ultra Wideband will offer peak download speeds of 4+ Gbps and upload speeds of 200+ Mbps in ideal conditions. To put it in context, you’ll be able to download an entire ultra-high definition (4K) movie in just seconds.
  4. What’s the difference between Nationwide vs. Ultra Wideband?
Verizon’s 5G Ultra Wideband uses high-band, ultra-wide mmWave spectrum. This delivers the fastest, most powerful 5G performance on the market today. In contrast, 5G Nationwide runs on lower spectrum bands alongside 4G LTE using Dynamic Spectrum Sharing (DSS) technology. When leaving an Ultra Wideband-covered area, you’ll still remain on the 5G Nationwide network.
  5. Hasn’t 5G been around for a while now?
Several wireless carriers offer 5G service, but remember: not all services are created equal. Verizon’s 5G Nationwide and 5G Ultra Wideband is built on the country’s largest, most reliable network.

5G May Be Available in Your Area

5G Nationwide is now available to over 200 million users in 1,800+ cities throughout the US. And if you happen to live in one of these 55 lucky cities, you should have access to Ultra Wideband as well. Verizon plans to expand service to 60 cities by the end of 2020.

The Future with 5G

Vestberg also explained how 5G technology is being used to create new and spectacularly immersive mobile experiences. In partnership with the NFL, Verizon has built the 5G SuperStadium app, which will let users to enjoy an in-stadium experience like never before. This includes viewing with up to seven camera angles, player POV, and augmented reality.

5G also offers promising performance for mobile gaming, 4K movies and video, and other data-heavy applications, including AR/VR, cloud computing, smart homes, self-driving vehicles, and more. As the technology ages and improves, it’s expected to get even better.

Customers using a 5G-enabled smartphones or tablets with qualified plans are set to see a huge difference over 4G.
