Use Waze to get you over the river and through the woods!

Waze is the preferred navigation app for many smartphone (and connected car) users. It’s owned by Google, but its interface and features are different, creating its own loyal base of users. Since the holiday travel season is coming up on us, it’s a great time to see if Waze is a better navigation app for you!

Consider adding Hum to your holiday packing list. Its Wi-Fi hotspot assures that everyone in the car has access to their favorite music and entertainment for the trip. Also make sure everyone has their own headphones and chargers. Translation: less backseat bickering!

Read on to find out more about Waze!

Get started with Waze.

Download Waze for Android or iOS. You’ll get real-time info on road hazards from other drivers, the best shortcuts to avoid accidents or road work, the lowest gas prices in town and more. It’s all accurate information, because it’s reported by real drivers all around you.

To get access to all Waze’s useful features, register for a Waze account after you download the app.

Set reminders with Waze.

Set reminders for departure times. After you enter your destination, select “Later.” Waze uses its crowdsourced tech magic to estimate how long it will take to get to your destination. Set your arrival time and save, and you’ll get a notification when it’s time to grab your keys and go.

Fun tip: Go to the Settings menu to integrate your Google and/or Facebook calendars in the app. You’ll get alerts and directions for your future events.

Send ETAs

Running late for a dinner date? Once you’re registered with the app, you can send ETAs to friends or family waiting for you at the restaurant. Waze will let them know where you are, and when you’ll arrive.

Avoid delays

You might find Waze’s speedometer function useful—it will sound an alarm when you’re exceeding the limit, thus helping you avoid a traffic ticket.

Don’t get stranded without fuel. Find gas stations en route or find the cheapest gas in town.

Sync up with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay

You can choose the Waze app as your primary navigator from your Android Auto touch screen.

Fun tip: if you don’t have Android Auto, set your smartphone app to respond to voice commands. Go to the “Sound & voice” menu and tap “Voice commands.”

Things are a bit more complicated if you want Waze to work with Apple CarPlay, but it is possible. After you download the app, go to Settings>General>Background App Refresh and turn the toggle on. Scroll down to select Waze. Make sure your Location Services under Settings>Privacy are on. Scroll down in Location Services to make sure Waze says “Always.”

You should be ready to connect your iPhone to your CarPlay system and select Waze.

Keep in mind, if CarPlay apps take up too much iPhone memory, iOS may automatically turn off the app.

Enjoy your favorite tunes.

Waze now has 8 audio partners. This means Waze users have access to pretty much any podcast or playlist their hearts desire from Pandora, Deezer, iHeartRadio, NPR One, Scribd, Stitcher, TuneIn and Spotify. Make sure you have the latest version of your preferred audio app, then sync it with Waze by tapping the music icon on the Waze screen. Whenever you want tunes or a story, tap the Waze music icon and select the one you want.

Customize and turn it off.

Under “Display & map,” choose which Waze features you want to activate, and which ones you want to turn off. You can also change the brightness of the screen with night mode view.

Waze tracks your location all the time. It’s how the app collects data for all its users. But, you can easily turn it off by tapping in the upper right-hand corner of the main menu to exit the app.
