Wireless Tax Fairness Act Passes

Congress passed the Wireless Tax Fairness Act on Tuesday (November 1), and the Senate is expected to follow suit. This bill prohibits imposing new state and local taxes on wireless providers and wireless users for a five year period. Joseph Miller writer, "Preventing tax increases on wireless services is a small but significant step toward ensuring the affordability of broadband for low-income consumers who are disproportionately people of color."

According to Representative Zoe Lofgren, “We need to encourage the development and adoption of wireless broadband, not tax it out of existence.” Wireless contracts currently pay 16.4% in contrast with the average tax on other goods and services of 7.4%.
