Wondering why you can't use that old cell phone from 1994? Wireless carriers today operate on two different types of technology—CDMA and GSM. Any phone that was originally made for a GSM network is incompatible with a CDMA network and vice versa. A good analogy would be trying to make an AM/FM radio pick up a satellite radio signal.

This is not true. CDMA and GSM are the two major technologies, but it does not explain why a cell phone from 1994 would not work. This has more to due with newer technologies and the switch from Analog to Digital, also the frequencies have changed slightly.
